Due to my recent graduation, I have been re-visiting a lot of “coming of age” themed movies and shows. In light of these times, I wanted to share what I have learned from the world of pop-culture as well as offer some recommendations. Most of these shows/ movies can be accessed through Hulu or Netflix.
Never Have I Ever
I recently watched the TV show, Never Have I Ever, on Netflix. The show was created by Mindy Kaling, and it was such a delight to watch. Not to mention, the content is just great! This show reveals the realities of high school combined with every possible awkward situation. If you are looking for a new show to watch, I would highly recommend. The episodes aren’t too long, and the plot has a nice flow to it.
Booksmart
Being that I am definitely the type of student who prioritizes a majority of my free time on academics, the message in this movie resonated with me. While the plot focuses on a high school graduation, I definitely have experienced some of these “coming of age” moments as a senior in college. Once again, the humor is light-hearted. Yet, the main characters’ experiences definitely spark reflection.
Lady Bird
If you haven’t seen Lady Bird, please go watch this movie. Growing up in Catholic School, this movie offers a new perspective on finding one’s voice and navigating all things adulthood. While the humor might be a little bold for the Catholic sphere (it depends on the viewer), this movie invites a lot of conversation. This will forever be one of my favorite movies, and I cannot recommend it enough.
Those were just a few recommendations—but I am still looking for more content to review! If you have any suggestions, please feel free to add them to the comments below. Thanks for reading!
